Afghan officials say 15 policemen have
been killed in western Afghanistan at the
end of a day punctuated by multiple
fatalities due to Taliban attacks.
A local official in Farah province says
the latest Taliban ambush took place
late Wednesday along the region's main
highway as a convoy of police patrolled
the area. The official said an additional
10 police officers were wounded in the
attack.
Earlier Wednesday, insurgent attacks
across Afghanistan killed at least 18
people, including a U.S. soldier, four
police and three civilians who died in an
attack on a joint NATO-Afghan military
base.
Authorities say at least 10 Polish
soldiers were wounded in the attack in
the eastern province of Ghazni, when
about 10 insurgents tried to storm the
base after detonating a car bomb at the
gate. Poland's defense ministry later
said 10 insurgents were killed in an
hours-long firefight that followed.
The Taliban claimed responsibility.
Earlier Wednesday, a suicide car bomber
attacked a coalition convoy in Lashkar
Gah, the capital of southern Helmand
province. The blast killed four civilians
and wounded 15 others.
And separately, authorities say six
Afghan drivers were killed and 10 others
wounded in western Farah province,
when rocket fire hit fuel trucks supplying
coalition forces. The inferno also
destroyed 40 trucks.
The Taliban also claimed responsibility
for that attack.
