An Israeli soldier, who was seen on video slapping a left-wing activist with his rifle, was removed from
military service, according to court
proceedings.Lieutenant Colonel Shalom Eisner, who was the deputy commander of the Jordan Valley
brigade, was caught on video beating a Danish leftist protester with his rifle, last year. Now, he has reached an agreement with the prosecutor in which he admitted to acting inappropriately, and he resigned from his military service. Eisner was to be indicted in a special military court at the Israel Defense Forces headquarters in Tel Aviv, on charges of abuse of authority to the point of endangering others and for inappropriate conduct. Eisner
is expected to be sentenced to two months of community service.
According to the indictment, Eisner used his rifle and hands to hit five leftist Palestinian activists and foreigners, who had participated
in a bike ride that was not authorized by the Israeli army. The incident took place outside the village of Ouja, near Jericho, in the Jordan Valley.
Eisner suffered from broken bones as a result of the protest, according to reports. The incident, which was caught on video and later published on the Internet, caused a public uproar, leading to the suspension of
Eisner.
