Woman gets 3 years jail for stealing $57 million from Holocaust survivor fund

A woman was arrested, charged and
convicted of stealing $57 million from a Holocaust survivor fund, according to court proceedings in New York. Now, the woman has been sentenced to 3years in jail. Luba Kramrish has been caring for her ailing 93-year-old mother, who is a Holocaust survivor. She is bedridden in a nursing home in the Toronto area in Canada. While on bail awaiting trial in New York for defrauding a
fund created after World War Two to help the poor and elderly survivors of the Nazi genocide, she was tending to her mother’s needs. Ironically, the 58-year-old Toronto woman used her mother as a reason for leniency as the last of dozens of defendants, who stole $57 million from the international victims fund, was being sentenced."Please, your honor, let me not live with the guilt of not being able to be next to my mother if God forbid something happens," she told Judge Thomas Griesa in Manhattan.
Despite her pleas to be spared from prison,she was sentenced Tuesday to 37 months in jail. The scam was "a despicable fraud" and an "ugly story," Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara told the court.
